Gervais, the Reporter of the Committee of Foreign Affaire in the Chamber of Deputies, referring to the New Hebrides, narked: "Considering the excellent rcatione between London and Paris, it is to be hoped our neighbours • will be able to bring the Australian States to an oqtiitable appreciation of our rights, in order to secure confirmation in tho New Caledonian Archipelago of tlu) situation due to us, owing to our pecuniary sacrifices, and tho moral and material efforts of our subjects, and because of the incontestable geographical fact that tho New Hebrides constitute a dependency of tho French Colony."
