FIRES.

An alarm of fire was received at the Fire Brigade Station ait about a quarter to one on Saturday, an outbreak Itaving been discovered in aeix-roomed house in Poulson street, owned and occupied by .Mr William Pickering. The Sydenham chemical engine was.quickly on the ecene, and wot: followed immediately by the Lich"field street dhenrical engine and steamer. Owing, to there being do available water near, the Chester street • chemical «ngino wae sen* lor, aa there was a dangty of four or five houses being . destroyed. -The one. on the east, and only four feet awny from Mr Pickfering's hwueei owned by Miss Stevene, wae badly ecorcKedi On the west another six-roomed house, owned by Mr Pickering, and only six feeb away, was slightly searched. The houee whore thefire atarted wae totally, destroyed. ( The work of the chemical engines in saving the adjacent houses -was favourably commented upon.. The house-destroyed was.insured in the Manchester office for' £250. ■

Between eleven and .twelve o'clock on .Saturday night ft notification was received at the Fire Brigade Station of a flrein EKwiboth street,* Liawood, off tbe" Ferry road. . The building destroyed wae a fiveroomed house, owned and occupied by Mr Alfred Bareon. The insurance on th* house and furniture wae £175 in the South British office. Tbe Christcburch plant were quickly on the scene, but owing to the absence of water only the chemical engines were of'any service, and tbfiea prevented the fine,* spreading to adjacent houses. Very little of the funutare wae saved, and Mr Barson will be a heavy loser: The fire started in the kitcfaetf, and it is thought that the cause of it wae a defect in the chimney. ,
