THE RESULT OF TRAINING.
It is stated by the Berlin papers that the achievements of the remarkable horse Hane, which solves arithmetical questions, are not the result of mental work, but merely the resnilt of training. One or two amusing examples of this expose nre (says the "Standard's" Berlin correspondent) worth mentioning. Heir Yon Osten, the owner, asked one of the spectators to show Hans his watch. A gentleman present took a new five-mark piece in his hand, and Herr Yon Osten, thinking it was a watch, turned round, whereupon the animal tapped with its hoof the right time, namely t<ll minutes to twelve, a result which was naturally received with peals of laughter. Tho explanation of Hans's clevernefs can be found in the following remarks of his groom:—"lt is I who am the clever Hans, for after I have lowered my eyes to the ground the animal begins to tap witii his hoof until I lift thorn up again. '
