The New Zealand Government has purchased a number of prize Kerry-Dexter bulls and heifers from the herds of the Duke of Leinster and the Ducbesa of Devonshire (? Newcastle). ; [The Kerry breed of cattle is undoubtedly an aboriginal herd, and is now the only native breed existing in Ireland. There k much in the Kerry which indicate* a rektionahip between it and the small Breton breed, and considering that Brittany and Kerry are the nearest points of France and Ireland, it is not improbable that at some remote period cattle may have been conveyed from one country to the other. The Dexter variety ia distinguished from tiie pure or' true Kerry in having a round plump body, short and rather thick legs, the head » heavier and wanting in that fineness that marks the pure Kerry, and the horn* are longer, atraighter, and coarser. It is on record that the Dexters owe their name to having been brought before the public by a Mr Dexter, agent to Lord Hawarden. He is said to have produced the breed from the beet mountain cattle of the district. The Dextem are evidently intensely inbred Kenies, and are remarkable for their prepotency. For their size they are deep milking cattle, and crossed with other breeds they produce beef of the finest quality. Youatt described the Kerry *s "truly a poor man'* ; cow, living everywhere, hardy, yielding for her size abundance of milk of good quality, aad fattening rapidly -when required." This is a correct description of the breeds, both the true Kerry and the Dexter. These cattle, purchased by the Government, are from two of the -principal herds in the United.. Kingdom, where .the Kerry Dexfen are very popular for cottagers' purposes.] A ZION ENGAGEMENT.
