MR WATSON'S OPINION.
NO GRAVE NECESSITY. (Received August sth, 10.55 p.m.) MELBOURNE, August 5. With reference to Mr Chamberlain's proposed new colonial conference on preferential trade, Mr Watson, the Federal Premier, saya he sees no grave necessity for such a meeting at the present juncture. In his view, Australia expressed its opinion last elections, and it now appears to be wisest to wait for a declaration on the subject by Britain. If the people at Home declared in favour of it at the elections, then it would be proper to call a conference of colonial representatives, with- a view to arriving at tin understanding as to the lines preference should take. All such a conference as proposed could consider would be detail*, , and these Jtoold be superfluous until the principle was affirmed.
