Cameron were passengers for Wellington by the Victoria last night. A number of friende of Mr Edward Herring, who lias recently diepoeed of the Alford Estate, met at the County Council Chambers, Ashburton, yesterday afternoon, to take farewell of him prior to his leaving the district to take sp liis'residenc© in Christchurch. Mr C. J. Harper, chairman of the County Council, presided, and on behalf of the residents of the Alford district, presented Mr Herring with a gold watch and chain", and Mrs Herring with a eilv#r coffee service, both suitably inscribed. A number of gentlemen spoke in terms of regret at Mr Herring's departure from the Ashburton county, and eulogised his generosity and faithful service on public bodies. Mr Herring thanked the meeting for the presentations. He had always enjoyed his connection with the County Council and other local bodiee with which he had been associated, but he had never done anything to deacrve such appreciation from the public. The health of Mr and Mns Herring was drunk with musical honours.
