INSPECTION OF MACHINERY.

m — (PRESS ASSOCIATION- TgIEORAIT.) • WELLINGTON, April 24. The Acting-Minister in charge of the Inspection of Machinery Department, the Hon. C. H. Mills, says that in any amendment of the Inspection of Machinery Act, tlie matter of providing for the issue ol third-class engine-drivers' certificates, and, a reduction of the minimum power for second-class certificates, will be considered on the lines suggested by a deputation on the 15th inst. Mr Mills does, not consider that the appointment of an inspector for surprise visits to boilers and engines .would be attended with the results anticipated by the deputation, as the Department's experience shows that the visits of the inspectors soon become known to owners, and consequently the visits do not come as a surprise -Moreover, in case of large plants, several daysi must he occupied in preparing for the inspection, as everything must he cool and clean. Mr Milk* thinks the mandatory provisions of the present Act sufficient to deter overloading of safety valves. The matter of printing a list of all boilers in the Colony will receive consideration when the Department's annual report is being compiled.
