SCHOOL COMMITTEES.
ASHBURTON. The Ashburton Borough School Committee held a special mtyiting on Monday evening to consider a communication- from the Board of Education in regard to the Allertoti school. Tlie Board pointed out tuat whila it was not considered desirable to form Allerton into a separate school district, tho only alternative wa«_Jo staff on die combined averages, which would i allow six certificated teachers and five | pupil teache.% or seven certificated teachers and three pupil teacliers. At the [ present time there wtre in the two schools '< «rven certificated tMicltets, all of whom the Board thought should be retained. The Board were also of opinion that advantage should be taken of tbe option allowed ; under the scale, and therefore proposed Ito remove the third standard from the AlI lerton school to the borough, thus doing I away with the neoes-sity for a pupil teacher thaw, and leaving Miss Burr in charge at a salary of £150 per annum, instead of reducing her to £IGS. It was decided to protest against the decision, and to urge the Board to allow a continuance of the existing conditions.
