MEETINGS, ENTERTAINMENTS, &c.

A -ocial in connection with the Canterbury Highland Rifles was held on Thursday in th© Canterbury Hull Buildings. There was a attendance. A musical programme was given, the items of which wero given by Mioses MuGregor, Picken, Lake. Wauchop. and Privates Picken and Partridge. Highland dunces were given by Miss Ida Fraser, Mr O. Bell, and Private Currie. Private Seymour played th* accompaniments for th© songs, and Piper Gordon Gemnvell, one of the pipers of th© company, played for th© Highland dancing. Chief Macpherson and Chieftain A. Fraser, of th© Scottish Society, were amongst the guests. The Young Peoples' No-License League met on November 11th. Considerable interest was exhibited in nominating candidates for a mock election of th© City Coun-

cil. The Loyal Gitv of Norwich Juvenile lodge of Oddfellows, Lyttelton, met on November 16th, N.G. Bro. Green being in the chair. A winging contest was lield for a priz* given by G.M. Bro. Grubb, and after a keen contest the prize was won by N.G. Bro. Lester. The President announced that the Library had been augmented by "fifty new book*, by good author*, which would be ready for issue next Lodge night. The annual social reunion of the St. Peter* (Ferry road) Young Men* Bible Class wa* held on November 9th. Mr J. Stout (leader) presided, and proposed the toast of "The King." Tbe other tojurt* honoured were:—"The Empire," proposed by Mr E. Dab-toll, responded to by Mr A. : Amcss; "The Ladies," proposed by Mr H. Hanna, responded to by 'Mi** Dalztell; ! "The President," proposed by Mr W. H. Sandford, and responded to by Rev. W. J. Uow; "Kindred dosses," proposed by Mr Bmith, responded to by Messrs G. A. Alexander {St. Paul's) and J. Thorn (St. Andrew's); "New Zealand Bible Class Union," proposed by Mr W. Jones, and responded to by Mr T. W. Reese (Prctident); "Church Officers," proposed by Mr B. Jones, responded to by -Messrs Burgess ! and Eaven; "The Class Athletic Club," proposed by Mr C. Munro and responded to by Messrs Jauiieson and Aylwood. During th* evening a varied programme was gone through, consisting of items by Kennedy's Chxhestra, W. H. •Sandford, W. Harvey, H. Hn_ui», Messrs Lang and j Amess. An entertainment wa* held In the Burwood schoolroom on Thursday, in aid'of the school fund. Over £6 was taken. It»m» wero given by ML*«* De Laeour, George, Holland and Beckingsale, Mrs Parrish, Mr Hawker, and Mr Petersen. Mr Waldroa gave anPexhibition of the trramaphone. The school prize concert will be held early next month. In connection -with the re-opening of the restored Church of Bt. John, a tea "meeting was held in the Oddfellows' Hall, i Woolston, on November 17th. Address** were given by the R*v.«H. T. Purcba* and the Rev. J. Gow, and threes or "four musical items were rendered by the choir and Mi»s M. Ronnie. •It th* last meetiotg of the Hornby Good Templars' Lodge.' Bro. H. Manhlre preBided. A special committee wa* appointed as delegates to the District Lodge in connection with a proposed picnic. A programme of song*, recitations, and reading was given during the evening. Mr L. H. King on Thursday gave a lee jturette to th* Avoiavide Boys' Guild, on ! hi* experiences in South America during an insurrection.
