CANTERBURY CHESS CLUB.
The annual meeting of the Canterbury Chess Club was held in the Chamber o! Commerce last night, when Mr J. 0. L. Scott presided. * The annual report slated that the average attendance on Club nights during the year had been exceptionally good, and the play, especially of some of the newer members, bad noticeably improved. Tho Winter Handicap Tourney closed on the 23rd inst. Mr Poupnrd took the first iirize with 20 wins and 8 losses, and Mr Nightingale, the second with 17 wins and 8 losses. The Tourney had proved so popular that the committee suggested that one should be instituted on similar lines for the summer months, Tho only Club match played during the year wits that by telegraph against Tiniaru, which was drawn. The Club was not represented at the last New Zealand Championship Congress, held at Auckland, but with so many strong playing members, there should be no difficulty in obtaining good representatives at the Congress to be opened at Wellington next Boxing Day. Should the Championship be brought back to Canterbury, or even a good score made bv the Canterbury representatives, it. would do much to popularise the game in Christchurch, and so help the membership of the Club, which was absurdly small for the size of the city. The balance-sheet showed that the receipts had been £39 12s Bd, and the expenditure £35 4s 7d, which left a cash balance of £4 8s Id. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. The following officers were elected: President, Mr J. G. L. Scott: vice-presi-dents, Messrs W. Hunter and W. R. Cook; lion, treasurer, Air J. J. Milner; hou. auditor, Mr C. M. Grav; hon. secretary, Mr G. H. Glutton: committee, .Messrs K. A. Joseph, J. Spiller, IT. J. Nightingale, C. Poupard, and F. Worsley. A sub-committee was appointed to make inquiries into the possibility of obtaining more suitable accommodation for the Club's meetings.
