Sir Joseph Ward left Wellington for this City by last night's steamer. The Dean of Christchurch, Rev. J. Gibb, Rev. J. Mackenzie, and Mr J. A. Flesher left for Wellington yesterday, to attend the conference on the Bible in schools question. Mr Juines Burnett, Inspecting Engineer for Hallways, and Mr If. Mauundrew, District Engineer, left for Invercargill by yesterday morning's express. Among tho passengers by the express for Ihe south Yesterday weit: Mr S. Campbell, Mr J."W. Russell. Mr J. T. Mitchin■<>n, Mr Max Frieillander. Mr A. Beaver (Dunedin), Mr J. Sherer, Mr .1. Mott, Mr 'J. Jenkins (New York), Air Turnbull, Mr fend Mrs Worsley, and Mr J. Bauer. The Wellington correspondent of "Tho Press" telegraphs that the Rev. James "Peterson, w-ho for over thirty yearn has fceen in charge of St- John's Presbyterian Church, lias expressed a desire to be relieved of his duties. It is understood that the position will be offered to the Rev. Dr. Gibb, of ihe First Church, Dunedin. Nothing definite in regard to the position will ,b* known until the matter is considered by the Presbytery. Mr H. Overton was a passenger from B_nmer Springs by last evening's north train. At the meeting of Papanui householders last evening, the Chairman, Mr D. Bunting, expressed appreciation of the interest taken in tlie Papanui school by Mr T. S. "Weston, who had for many years annually tortseiited, ;i dux medal for competition. A lieurty vote of thanks was uccorded Mr "iWstou. Mr and Mrs J. 0. N. Grigg were passengers from the south by the express last ■fight. ■Mr H. Black (Melbourne), Dr. E. H. WiUiMiw, Mr F. H. Barzant (London), Mr Maxwell (Auckland). Mr and Mrs I> eem, Mr Douglas (Dunedin), Mr Wm. J: am (Dunedin), Mr and Mrs 7*?. Joseplisoo (Sydney), and Miss Bryant (Sydney) arrived to town yesterday.
