A MYSTERIOUS EARTHQUAKE.

THE ALLEGED SHOCK IN MELBOURNE.

SEISMOGRAPHS MAKE NO RECORD.

United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—-Copyright MELBOURNE, March 30. Mystery surrounds Friday night's supposed earthquake. The Government Astronomer declares that the seismic instruments at the Observatory recorded no earth tremor. He can give no explanation of the affair, but he says there can be no possible doubt, that there was not an earthquake. He suggests that it might have 'been caused by an electric difidiarge in the air, ojr an aerolite fa'ling in the sea near the coast might cause noi.se and vibration. Amongst tho hundreds of people who reported that they felt a shock were two of the attendants of the Observatory.

Dr. Coleridge Farr reports that the seismograph in the Christchurch magnetic observatory shows no indication of the earthquake supposed to have occurred at Melbourne.
