The principal social innovations in the United States this season is the acclimatisation of the garden party, which has hitherto been known to Americans chiefly through their reading of English novels. The ia-hion has been set by Mr* Roosevelt, who has utilised the ground, of the White House for this purpose insteadTof holding the conventional receptioa indoors. Her lead is being followed by some of the best-known hostesses in Washington, Newport, and Lennox. The opportunity for the display of handsome summer gowns and hats is -specially appreciated,
