MEETINGS, ENTERTAINMENTS, &c.
At Rapaki on Easter Monday an entertainment in aid of the Maori Hall Fund was given in the hall, which was crowded. Mr N. C. Schumacher presidedi weie sung by Misses Tikao (4), Ellison (2). and Ada Soloman, and Messrs Martin Watson, John Tikao, and Pohio. Miss Rachel Tikao accompanied tha songs on the piano and played a solo. Hakas and single,and dotbie i oi dances completed the programme, which was followed by a ball.
The .fctemner Musical and Dramatic Society its first entertainment in tie Wesleyaii Church, Sumner, on Thursday evening. The programme consisted of a description of travel and scenery in Westland, '. by Mr Wilkinson, illustrated by lantern elides, and also the exhibition of portraits of some .great men «£ the Empire. After* tlhe entertainment a meeting was -htl.d of members of the society—a very recentlyformM one?—to fill up some posjbionA on the executive, which includes members of the Ohairoh of England, Presbyterian, and Methodist Churches. A strong Committee was elected. It was decided to establish a "Sumner Manuscript : Magazine," ■which it was hoped would induce the younger people of Sumner, as w«U as adults, to try their hands at contributing. Mr Mosley.was chosen [ editor. The president is the Bey. T. F. Jones, vice-presi-dent Mrs Cooper, treasurer Mr Linzey, and organist Miss Cooper.
The Eyreton school treat was held on Friday, when about one hundred and twenty children were conveyed in vehicles provided by the committee and friends to the Kaiapoi beach.
Harvest thanksgiving services were conducted in the Kaiapoi Church of England on Sunday. There were full congregations, and the Rev. J. Hamilton, vicar of Hic'carton, conducted the services. \. - , •* At the annual meeting of the St.' Matthews Young Men's Guild , , theißev. 1 H. Williams presided. The report' stated that the year had been a successful one. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £2 10s, lid, assets £91, liablities nil. The election of officers resulted as - follows: — President, Rev. H. Williams; vice-presi-dents, Messrs "C. E. Bevan-Brown,' J . N. Dv Feu, H. Francis, C. Hall, T. Gordon, and T. W. Griffiths; hon. secretary, Mr A. Butler; hon, treasurer, Mr E.Ridder (re-elected); committee, Messrs J. E. Allen; H. Carter, S. Knight, F. Sharman, and E: West; auditor, Mr' J: Blaylock; delegates, to D.V.M.C.A., Messrs Ridder atfd Powell.
