Daly, Mayor of Kaiapoi, forwarding the subscription of that town (£66 4s). says:—"l -desire to express our feelings of gratitude t-o the generous people of Kaiapoi for rhsir ready helr>, which will be devoted towards assisting many really in need. Many htre lost homes which would take years "to reinstate without assistance. As you may have observed, the Government have promised 24s for every 20s subscribed to £1000. Of this sum about £9GO has been subscribed, and if other towns would only come forward in the same manner as our friends at Kaiapoi have (to whom ■we do not know how the express our gratitude in words) there would be very little delay in calling on the Government for the fulfilment of the promises made.' , NOTES AND ME MOB A N DA. The closing ceremony in connection with Girton College, Larimer square, will take place to-morrow afternon, wheu the prizes, medals, etc., will be distributed., a programme of school work will be gone through, and an address delivered by the Rev. 6. G. Fielding. The annual meeting of the shareholders of the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company will be held to-morrow afternoon in the Hall ol the Chamber of Commerce. As will be seen by a notification elsewhere the s.s. ftotomahana and To Ana-u will accompany the Discovery to the Heads on Saturday,-leaving.the wharf at 2 p.m. The Papanui Summer Fair -will be opened by Mrs Julius to-day at. 3 p.m. Tnere will be a large variety of useful and ornamental articles, a Christmas tree, Punch and Judy, etc. "The Messiah." will be given to-night in the Canterbury Hall by the Musical Union. The soloists will be Mrs Burns, Miss Graham, Messrs A. Merton and Collier. The prizes in connection with the Floral Fete will be distributed at eight o'olock to-night at the City Council Chambers. A concert trill be given to-night at St. Luke's Schoolroom in aid of i>t. Luk&'s Young Men's Club. T3ie scholars attending the .Courtenay and Kimberley Schools paid a visit to the Glass Works yesterday afternoon. They were in charge of Mr Harry McNair. The children were delighted with the practical demonstartion given. , i The annual' meeting of the City and Suburban Burgesses* Association will be held to-night in the Congregational Schoolroom, Manchester street, at eight o'clock. The city and suburban M.H.R.'s have been invited to Speak. ■ In connection with the Sports Meeting on St. Patrick's Day, in aid of the Home for Incurables, etc.,' Mr John Barrett, of Kirwee, 'has given a prize of £2 2s. The manager of the Burnbam Industrial School desires to acknowledge -with thanks the receipt of a cheque lor one guinea Irom Messrs As-hby, Bergh and Co. towards the children's Christmas festivities.
