Sir, —In reference to the remarks made by the Magistrate when dealing the maintenance case against the man Workman for failing to provide for his family, I can positively assure you that the relief granted to Mrs Workman has not been withdrawn, nor has such -withdrawal been suggested. Mrs Workman called at this office on December sth, and stated that she had received £3 from her husband, and then said, that in the event of her husband regularly complying with the order of the Court she would be able to manage without the Board's assistance. On this occasion she was paid a sum of money towards the rent of her cottage for the previous four weeks, and also received the regular weekly order for food, the food being again given, without que&tion, on Friday" last. Further, the Committee's minute book shows that on no occasion has an application from Mrs Workman been declined. I may. also say that the Board has always understood the "intention of the Magistrate in dealing with Workman, nor has it attempted to reflect in any way on the Magistrate's judgment;— Yours, etc..
