CITY COUNCIL.

The Council met last night. Present — His Worship the Mayor (Mr A. E. G. Rhodes), ana Crs. C. M. Gray, J. Clarke, H. Wood, J. M. Taylor, G. Simpson, R. M. Macdonald, H. H. Loughnan, H. B. Sorensen, Geo. Payling, C. D. Morris, W. E. Samuels. An apology for absence was received from Cγ. Smith. The Treasurer's statement showed debtor balance at date £8228 18s 3d, as against £4159 at the corresponding period of last, year. Receipts since last meeting amounted to £1654 6s Yd, and accounts totalling £1171 12s 9d were presented for payment. The Mayor stated that he desired to get away in time to meet the express, by which Kir Hector Macdonald arrived, if the Council would permit him. His Worship then alluded to the abattoirs and other matters, dealt with, elsewhere. 'lhs Treasurer of the Railway Fire Brigade wrote- with regard to the instruction given to the engine-driver not to take the Fire Brigade horses to fires in Sydenham, arid requested That the Council agree to- horse the engine so that the plant might be taken to any fire where* the engine might ba of service between the hours of 6 p.m. and 6 a.m., and in City would have the benefit of a large and effective plant'whenever re> quiredl Or. Gray thought the letter had bsen penned under a. misapprehension. It was never intended to horse the engine to any part, of the district the Brigade might, wish, j He had explained this to .the Superintendent of the Brigade. Cr. JUacdonald said it was seldom, if ever, the Railway engine w-ent to Sydenham. He would move as an amendment that the matter be referred to the Fire Brigade Committee. ■."Cγ. Tbe Works Committee's report, stated ' that the surveyor reported that the material tor the "Colombo street bridge is partly in Topliss's yard, and the balance camu to hand in the Gothic, and the contractors would immediately proceed with ■ the work. The report was adopted. j The Central Executive Committee of the Indian Famine Relief Fund wrote from Calcutta stating that the fund' liad now closed, and thanking Christchurch for its . assistance. Ihe Canterbury Women's Institute wrote asking that the Council should nominate more lady members of the Charitable Aid Board. Cr. SoreiJsen spoke of the good work done by women nranbers of such bodies, and the letter wae received. At 8.45 the Mayor and Cr. Macdonald obtained peimission to withdraw from the j meeting'to receive General Sir Hector Macdonald on behalf of the city. Cr. J. -M. Taylor moved, in accordance with, notice given, that the orders given to carters to remove rubbish of all descrip-. tioris when on their rounds, be rescinded, and thafc only household rubbish be collected free. The motion was carried, and also a subsequent motion, proposed, by. Cr. Taylor, and seconded by Cr. Clarke, that the Works Committee be requested to re-cast the charges for Temoval of trade and household' refuse. The City Surveyor reported that the contractors for the Colombo street bridge had applied for possession of the ground, | • and stated that the whole of the material for the girders was now in Ghristehurch. The girders for tbe East Belt bridge were still in course of construction in Messrs | Anderson's yard in Lytcelton. The report was adopted.
