THE PRICE OF COAL.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE PBESS. Sir, —In your article on Saturday you say that the railway should reduce the exorbitant rates charged for bringing coal through, the tuan<el. Well, sir, having learned that the rate charged is 3s per ton, will you be good enough to tell us how much they will have to reduce it to enable us to get vVestport coal in Christchurch at 7s 6d per quarter, the rate for Newcastle, as against 10s at present? Newcastle is carried further by boat, also pays Is per ton more for rail carriage. Another question I would like to ask is why we now have to pay 7s for a quarter ton of Homebush., ■ when we used to pay 6s 3d only some time ago when railway charged about 2s per ton more than they do now:— Yours, etc., CONSUMER
