THE GENERAL ASKED TO VISIT TIMARU.
There is a probability that Sir Hector Macdonald will pay a visit to Timaru. The directors of the ' South - Canterbury Caledonian Society caiwsd to Melbourne a week ago,. asking Sir Hector if he could' '■ make it convenient to pay Timaru a visit • . when touring New Zealand, and a reply , was received in the negative. Not satis- - > fied with this, the directors and many '..=; members of the Caledonian Society have- , .." been using all their powers of persuasiou.--\ in order that Timax-u may ba favoured with;; •>. a visit from "the hero of a hundred fights." w On Monday morning, the secretary to the^' ■ Caltedoniam Society received the following r} telegram from Mr John Mill, Dunedin, .< - $ whom the Society have asked to watch ■ their interests in Duixedin in the matter f • ... ; will do all I possibly can to get Sir - r Hector Macdonald to stay at Timaru. 1 Will wire you later on." Shortly before noon of the same , day a second telegram . was received from.Mr Mill as follows: — .-■;■' "I ha.ye now secured the good offices of • Sir Joseph Waxd to get Sir Hector Mac-- ~ • donaJd to stay at Timaru." It is now con-' - fidently expected that, the distinguished visitor will call at Timaru. Should ani ticipaions be realised, the Caledonian Society intend to entertain their visitor right royally. The Mayor lias received the following tele* i gram from General Sir Hector Maodonald, ; in response to the welcome from the citizens . of Christohurch forwarded by him,: —"Please i accept yourself and convey to citizens my : ' warm thanks for hearty welcome to New Zealand. —Hector Macdonald." -'-
