OBITUARY.
United Press Association—By Electric ■ Telegraph—Copyright. . (Received October 22nd, 9.15 a.m.) LONDON, October 21. ~ Sir A. L. Smith* late Master of the .Rolls, is dead, aged sixty-five years. It was only* last year that the Right Hon. Sir Archibald Levin Smith was appointed Master of the Rolls, and but a few days have passed since bis resigna-' tion of the position. The late Master was a Judge of the High Court of Justice from 1883 to 1892, and a Lord Justice of Appeal from 18Sfc> to 1900. He was knighted in 1885, and created a Priw Councillor in 1893. The death of Sir A. L. 'Smith is pathetically sad, as only six week* ago his wife, Lady Smith, was drowned, under distressing circumstances, in a Scotch river near to the shooting lodge where she and her husband were staying for the Long Vacation. The shock of his wife's dsath has, no doubt, been ' the cause of Sir A. L. Smith's regrettable decease. In the ranks of the English judges ' ha stood in the forefront. Hβ was a member i of the famous Parnell Commission. In his he was a great oarsman, and rowed for Oxford versus Cambridge somewhere in the late fifties. ' " .
