DISCUSSION BY THE DRAINAGE BOARD.

A sids aspect of the abattoirs question— namely, the suggestion that the sewers of the Drainage Board should be used , for -the drainage of the proposed! abattoirs— was dealt with at meeting of the body in-question. A letter received.' from Mr Ji. D. Dobson, engineer to the Ohristchurch City Council, stated that the discharge would be the water .used in washing down the abattoirs, and that used in the butchering operations. It' was not expected to be of an offensive nature when leaving the works,, and every care would jOβ taken to settle the grease in grease j trapsi in order to prevent any choking of the pipes. ;Mr Dobson said that, as he understood, "the small percentage of sewage which this discharge contained- was the euief .difficulty whicn prevented its treatment by the septic tank, , or some- ehndlar process applicable to ordinary sewage. iSome <nscussion followed the reading of the letter, those present being of different opinions' as, to tne deleterious effect the "contaminations might have. Mr Gy Mclntyre moved-, "That* the Christchurch -Drainage Board cannot see ite way to consent to its sewers being used for the, ptirpose.'of providing means of discharge for the proposed abattoirs." •Mr C. Burgess seconded the motion. ■Mr C.
