REMOVAL OF OLD BUILDINGS.
POLICY OF THE CHUBOH PROPERTY TRUSTEES.
In the annual repoit ol tin© Church Property Trustees, as laid before the Diocesan Synod vest€xday afternoon, it was stated that in "the course of the year the Trustees I direoted their attention to certain shops and i cottages of ancient date, tbe appearance of f which was far from being creditable to the • Trust, while it was a souroe.of ever-recur- : ring expense to maintain them at even the \ lowest standard of habitable condition. It y?as evident to the Trustees that these properties "were considerably behind the requirements of: the. day, were an eyesore in the ! localities in "which they stood, aodi were oalI cukted to give occasion to those who might ; only be too ready to take up a reproach against "the Church." It became equally evident, on inquiry, that it was not sound finance to go on expending money in the endeavour to keep these worn-out buildings in repair. Accordingly, the Trustees) decided to sell for removal six old and decayed cottages on town sections 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, and 15, Salisbury; street East (whioh realised the sum of £78 17s), end, after calling for tenders, they had built seven* new cottages on this land, the contract price being £2779. A similar decision wa« come to in respect of five old cottages on town section 276, Kilmore street West (which sold for £6710s 6d), and in their place three cottages of superior character were in course of erection, at a contract price of £1735. These properties were part of the General Trust Estate. It was also' determined to sell for removal seven decayed and wretchedly inconvenient shops and the old building anciently used as Christ's College Grammar School, on reserve No. 8, Oxford terrace (which realised £70 Is 6d), and to build in their stead sis new shops, at a price per lowest tender of £2964. This sum would be advanced to the Oxford Terrace Reserve Account, in addition to the. existing loan, by the General Trust Estate. The site of the old Grammar School was for the present vacant. . . Tne action above reported formed part of a general policy which, the Trustees proposed to carry out, as occasion arose, with respect to all buildings under their control which might require removal rather than repair.
