* MEETING AT L^TJMLTON.
'A:'public meeting' was held in the Colonists/ Hall, Lyttelton, last night, to, take the Antarctic Expedition. - The, attendance was meagre. were inadfer for the non-attend-ance of-the Bev.-E. E. Chambers and Crs. Obok and Cleary. / ■ The Mayor (iMr.T. C.. Field) was in the c_air, and ei_pJa__ed that several Antarctic expeditions wesre/to, take place. /The Britktfi ! teoverament had given' £46;000, and private &übscriptaous- had amounted to £45,000, and in addition scientific apparatus had been provided for the British expedition., wihica was.expected to arrive in" next, month!:' In. Christchurch a representative meeting had recommended that ©viblic, meetings should bo held in Ghrostchuxch and in Lyttelton; that a converspaione. ehould be held in. Christchurch to welcome the expedition, and a send-ofi shbirldt'be, given at -Lytteiton. Entrance to the conversazione would- be by ticket, "at say, 2s 6d each. The Chairman pointed out the advantages to science which were likely to accrue from Antarctic exploration. ■ Cr. Whitby suggested that the Discovery should be met on 'her arrival. The Chairman said the Mayor of Chrisfcchurch, the Chakman of the Harbour Board, members of the Philosophical Society, and other leading men. would mee(i the Discovery. No' support was to be looked for from -the Government. The send-off would take a form somewhat similar to the send-off of - the - Contingents. The Rev. C. Coates thought the Borough Council could effectively repnsuent Lyttelton, and his Worship could well represent the Council on the Obadstohurch Committee. i Captain Whitby, moved —'That those, present, with the BeV. E. E. Chambers," 1 form a committee to arrange , with the Ohristchurch GOTramdttee." Thia was agreed to, and thte Mayor, Crs. Whitby, and Webb 'were appointed to represent Lyttelton on any committee-to bo tormed at Cbjistehurch.' I After some conversational discussion the ! meeting adjourned. I The Mayor'of Qu'isteiinrch intends calling [ a meeting of citizens fco-roorrow afternoon, to consider the question of the reception of * the Antarctic expedition, which arrives in , Lyttelton next month.
