Already the number of applicants for the coal and blankets under the Marks bequest has exceeded tbe amount at the disposal of the Mayor, and, therefore, it is useless others applying. A sale of work in aid of the lectern fund will be opened in tbe Avonside schoolroom on Thursday, at 2.30 p.m. There will also be an evening entertainment. It is intended to revive "Sweet Lavender" for two nights only at the Theatre Royal, under tho auspices of the- New Zealand Natives' Association, on Tuesday and Wednesday, July 9th and 10th. A social and dance will be held in the Recreation Hall of the Chri-tchurch Working Men's Club, to-morrow evening, to celebrate the twenty-first anniversary of the club. The "Sam Weller Swarry" takes place on the 10th inst., at 7 p.m. The annual social given to members of the Metaphysical Club will take place to-morrow at 151 Gloucester street. At a Committee meeting of the Lancaster Park Swimming Club, held at the Lancaster Park Hotel last nigbt, final arrangements were made for the annual smoke concert, to bo held next Friday night. The prizes won during the season will be presented at the concert. ,--.,,- .. An attractive feature will" be a somewhat extensive exhibition of scholastic and other works of art.
