ANGLICAN GENERAL SYNOD.
(PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEORAM.) NAPIER, February 4. At the General Synod to-day, the business was almost purely formal. The report of the Commititee on amendment of the canon for the trial of Bishops was received, and the report of the Melanesian Mission was referred to the Missions Committee. The rest of the afternoon session was occupied in sanctioning, the lease, sale, or exchange of church lands in Eltham, Wellington, Master-ton, and Hamilton. The evening session was mainly taken up with a discussion on a bill moved by the Bishop of Waiapu. in reference to the authority of the Bishops being required for alterations in Church fabrics and utensils. The motion was strongly opposed by some speakers on the ground- that in a democratic country like New Zealand it was intended by the early founders of the Church of New Zealand to place as little temporal power in the hands of the Bishops as possible, such duty being left to the trustees of the dioceses.
The bill was thrown cut on the second rea-ding.
