MEETINGS, ENTERTAINMENTS, &C.
The programme of the Fuller Vaudeville Company at the Oddfellows' Hall was repeated for the last time last night. This evening there will be a new programme, in which Mr Faning, Miss Devoe, Miss Belmont and the other —.embers of the company will appear.
A most enjoyable social in connection with the Canterbury Bowling Club took place at St. John's Schoolroom last night. There was a goodly muster of the members of the club and their friends. Dancing was kept up with great spirit, Mr C. H. Fox prtsiding at the piano. Several songs and recitations were also given during the evening.
The annual meeting and coffee supper in connection with the Kirwee Band of Hope took place last week. The report shewed the Society to be in a prosperous condition.
At the weekly competition ot the Rangiora Morris Tube Club for the president's prize, C. d'Auverjjne, W. Efford, senr., and C. E. Bell, 35 ; R. Efford, E. W. Bell, C. DuMoulin, J. Fraaer and W. Efford, junr., 34; F. Beker, C. Fraaer, H. J. Gulliver and R. Walker 32, were the principal scorers. On Tuesday evening a pictorial exhibition of the Transvaal War was given in the Fendalton Hall, to a. large company. Musical items were given by Mr Buckingham, who also described the pictures.
At a meeting of the committee of the Christchurch Homing Pigeon Society, in tlie club rooms, on Tuesday night (Mr E. D. Rees in tho chair), a letter was received from the Union Steam Ship Company, agreeing to carry the club's birds free of charge, and offering careful attention. A vote of than—s was passed to the company for their kindness. Training will commence north and south next Tuesday.
At an ordinary meeting of the Richmond School Committee, the master reported that the number on the roll was 563, and the average attendance during the pas£ month 501. It was resolved to dose the school on August 31st for the usual spring holidays. The Chairman, reported having made arrangements for unfurling the flag on Thursday afternoon next. The annual examination report of Messrs Wood and Ritchie, the Board's inspectors, stated:—"ln all that pertains to efficient control and loyal serviceatoly rend—-cd by its teaching staff, this sc_opl is surpassed by none in North Cante .bury. The admirable qualities of thoroughness and intelligence, which have long been notable features of its work, are in every way fully sustained, and its general tone is excellent." A letter was received from the Education Board, expressing the Board's pleasure at the excellence of the examination report. A hearty vote of tha_ks wars passed to the head master and teachine staff.
An interesting entertainment was given at Rangiora on Wednesday evening by the pupils of Mrs and Miss Eva Atkinson. It consisted of a cantata, "The Silver Penny," the characters being taken by the Misses M. and I. Jones, B. Buss, N. Carmiehael, D. and A. Carew, McLean, B. Atkinson and Goode. Musical selections were given by the Misses M. and I. Jones, M. and J. Latter, M. Walker, A. Lilly, B. Buss, D. Mathias, D. Scott and C. Ambrose, and Masters G. and C. Smith. There was a large attendance.
At the Thursday evening meeting of the Lyttelton Literary Society, Mrs R. R. M'Gregor read a paper on home training and selfimprovement, and Mr J. M'Gregor a paper on the Poor Laws. A discussion followed among the members, who also commented on the excellence of both papers.
