FUMIGATION OF VESSELS.
(PRBSS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) WELLINGTON, April 19. The Government is appointing supervisors at each port to superintend the fumigation of vessels. Mr W. H. Burns has been appointed here. Sulphur fumes are believed to kill anything, it applied long enough. A chemical known as formalin will disinfect even delicate goods without damage. Some interesting information dealing with the bubonic plague, supplied to the Government by the Vice-Consul for Germany, at Wellington, is published in the "Gazette" to-night.
(PRKSS ASSOCIATION* TELEGRAMS.) AUCKLAND. April 18. The cargo steamer Fernfield, on arrival from Sydney, .went into quarantine till Monday. The Mayor has received news that the Howick beach is strewn with rats supposed to have been drowned in attempting to swim ashore from vessels fumigated in quarantine. The Lyttelton Borough Council are about to appoint a special inspector, to cany out a thorough system of sanitary regulations, which have been recommended by their inspector of nuisances. Probably in consequence of the New Brighton Council offering double the price per dozen for rats to that obtainable at the City Council Chambers, there was not a very large ij onse yesterday to the offer made by the l>. cy Surveyor. Thirty-nine were brought in, and it is expected tliat there will be a larger number to-day.
