» The scholars of Irwell school were given their annual treat at Meadowbank last Friday. Mr and Mrs Rhodes had spared no pains to provide a day's pleasure for the children and their friends.' The hearty cheers given for both host and hobtess just before the party broke up showed that all thoroughly appreciated their kindness. Mrs Rhodes presented prizes to the children for running, jumping, &c, every child on the ground receiving a gift. The school prizes were handed to the recipients by the same lady. On Boxing Day the Kowai Rifle Club held a field day on the Rangiora range, arid the prizes were afterwards distributed at the Lion Hotel. 'The principal scorers were:, — First-class Shots, 200," 500 and 600yda, seven shots at each distance: T. S. Robinson 80, W. Ritchie 79, G. Evans 78, D. McKay and W. Morrow 77, E. d'Auvergne 71, F. *H. Ridder and T. M. Bunting 70, A. Whitley and W. Banks 69. Second-class (same distance): T. Smith 75, R. Vallance 72, W. Watts 71, J. Pethig 65, F. Waguer 60, J. Smellie 58, J. Gorrie 55, W. Stalker 54, J. Dron 47. Mr Robinson, of the Reserve Corps, won the Champion Medal.
