NOTES AND MEMORANDA.
The Christchurch Amapsur Rowing Ciub have just received from Mr George Norton, of Wellington, a new Association racing four. Tbe boat contains the new ventilating apparatus, which could not be obtained in former boats, and tho seats are of a n-aw design. * The annual meeting of the Council of the New Zealand Educational Institute is to be opened at Timaru on Tuesday. The North Canterbury branch will be represented by Messrs J. Voss (president), F. J. Howley (treasurer), T. W. Ambrose, W. Brock and R. B. Ryder. The Military Tournament, to be held at Lancaster Park on New Year's Day, promises to be a decided success... All the winning teams of tbe colony from the recent tournaments at Wellington and Dunedin are to compete. Very large entries have been received for the individual and comic items, whilst for team events record entries have been received. In view of the great military enthusiasm at present in existence, there will, no doubt, be a very large gathering of the public. The committee of the Lyttelton Amateur Swimming Club have decided to send two members to i ©present Lyttelton at the Australasian Championship' meeting. As will be seen elsewnere, the members of j tbe Christchurch Amateur Operatic Society j intend again giving Gounod's '* Messe Solenelle" on Sunday evening next. In addition to the Mas 3, there will be vocal solos by Misses McLaughlin and Cameron, and a clarionet solo by Mr Corrigan. A full rehearsal will take place at the Opera House on Sunday afternoon, at three o'clock. Mr St. Hill's last lecture on '"Palmistry" will be given at the Art Gallery this evenins;, at eight o'clock. If the arrangementa being made by the Christehurch Regatta Club are carried out in their entirety, the competition at Stewart's Gully, on February 15th, will be one of the most successful held under its auspices. Tentative promises of a champion four from Picton, of a four to take part in the junior races from Hokitika, and of crews from the West End Club, Auckland, and from Wellington, have been received, and the Railway Department have agreed to put on two excursion trains, which it is confidently expected .will be required to accommodate the holiday makers on that particular day.
