FEDERATION.

THE HON. J. G. WARD INTERVIEWED.

United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.

SYDNEY, October 19.

The Hon. J. G. Ward, interviewed, said that since he had been away there had been a movement to bring New Zealand into line with Federation. It looked to him now as if New Zealand could only watch. If she was to come into Federation it must be done when the opinion of tbe people was sufficiently advanced to warrant the step being taken. Looking at the immense potentialities of the trade between Australia and New Zealand, it would be in the interests of both to endeavour to establish a customs union on carefully thought out lines. If ever they were to be brought into the common fold, the project must be approached with caution, and proceeded with by gradual steps. Mr Ward favours both the Pacific and Cape cables. The development of the Cape trade must be enormous, and there was no reason why private enterprise should not give us another route.
