A LITERARY POLICEMAN.
Mr Balfour has (says the "Sheffield Telegraph") granted a pension -of £40 per annum out of th« Civil List fund to Charles Afcshetun, the ex-policeman. Asuheton was a policeman in the Merionethshire force. During his spare time he turned his attention to literature, taught himself Latin and kindred subjects, and published many books of exceptional merit. He won numerous prizes at the Eisteddfodau, wrote an excellent history of Welsh literature, and is now engaged on a Welsh bibliograpli. He retired from the force some time ago.
