NEW ZEALAND NATIVES' ART SECTION.

'"./m •' • —•- The 'first? meeting of the Committee of the < newly-constituted art section of the New ( Zealand Natives' Association waa held yes : terday afternoon, Mr W. Recce (President) in the chair. The President explained that the idea was to promote and foster '•art among New Zealanders, in all its branches. It wua proposed to hold annual competi- . tions in the various branches, for which special prizes would be given. He offered to give a gold medal as a special prize for the ' best exhibit. After discussion it was de- ' cided to hold the first competition about the * end of October or beginning of Novembernest, prizes to be given in oil and water- . colour painting, black and white drawing, : photography, carving, modelling, designing, . sculpture, etc. It was decided to hold a i competition for designs for the best certifl- < cate, to be awarded to successful exhibitors, : and to giva a special priza for the best map < drawn by school children. The arrange- < ment of the scheme was left to a Sub-Cor- ■ mittee, consisting of Messrs W. Menzies Gibb, , W. A. Bo wring and W. J. Poison, who were . instructed to report at a future meeting. It ] was decided that the- competition should be - open to all amateur artists, who should be,' or should become, members of the New Zea- . land Natives' Association, and that it should be open to members without fee.
