CHRISTCHURCH. Friday, June 30. (Before A. Ayers, W. W. Collins and J. Connal, Esqs., J.P.s). Dbunkenness.—For a first offence, a man Was fined 5s or, in default, twenty-four hours' imprisonment. j Pbohibition Order.—On his own ap-j plication, an order was made against a man to be current in Christchurch and suburbs for one year. Miscellaneous;— For leaving vehicles unattended J.- Aliwright and A. Rhoda - were fined each 5s with costs 7s.—J. Thomas for riding a bicycle on a footpath was* fined 10s with costs 7s.—A. Lees for allowing a horse to wander, 5s with costs 7s. (Before R. Beetham, Esq,, S.M.) Ne&lected •Children.-—Ellen' MdKenzie was charged with having neglected her three children—twins, aged one year and' eleven months, and one four months old—in a manner likely to cause them bodily injury. The circumstances of the case were fully brought out before. Mr Bishop, S.M., on the 16th inst., when the children were ordered to be sent to Burnham. After the evidence of eight witnesses had been heard, the accusd was committed for trial, 'bail being allowed the accused in £25 and one surety in £25. (Before N. K. Bowden and W. I. Ballinger, JEsqrs., J.P.s,) Alleged Arson.*—Robert Bowman, on remand, was.charged with having, on June 16th, wilfully set fire to a building in Lichfield street, the property of" Joshua Strange Williams. Sub-Inspector O'Brien prosecuted for the . police,! and Mr Kippenberger appeared for', the accused. A. C Nottingham stated his firm were agents for the building, which was insured in the Royal Office for £20. To Mr Kippenberger: He would sajy that the accused bore a very good character. This, concluded "the case for the prosecution. TheBench said that they were not satisfied with the evidence, and considered that it was im-, possible for Paget to see the reflection' of the ! flames as be stated on evidence. - Paget's evidence could not be substantiated, and he ought to have been quite able to arrest the man. Case dismissed.
