FIRE ESCAPES.

The "Post" states that the Commissioner of Police has issued a circular to Inspectors of Licensed Houses stating that the appliances in use at all hotels of more than one floor for escape in case of fire should be inspected aa eajrly as possible. To ensure the safety of each hotel it se&ms in the Commissioner's opinion advisable that where there is no verandah immediately accessible each bedroom above the ground floor should have its awn fire escape, or as an alternative each corridor out of which there are sleeping- rooms should be provided with at least two escapes (one at each end), always accessible, and directions printed in large type giving the locality of the escape should be posted in prominent positions Air Tunbridge thinks that light, flexible wire-ropa ladders appear to be the most suitable escapes. In his opinion loudsounding electric bells throughout the hotels, with attachments enabling the whole to be sounded at one time by touching a button, on each floor, would very materially aid in alarming the occupants. The Commissioner points out that the Inspectors are to report to the Licensing Committee if they consider the means of escape in any hotel are not sufficient.
