GREAT STORMS ON THE ATLANTIC.
SINGULAR EXPERIENCE OF A LINER. ;< United Press Association—By Electric ; ' Telegraph—Copyright. - ... LONDON, February 7. Terriffo storms have swept the Atlantic. The Cunard liner Lucania, bound to NewYork, fought a hurricane for sixteen hours. Oil was poured on the sea, but proved useless. When tho vessel was approaching the American coast a school of whales in front necessitated the stoppage of the steamer to prevent the propeller from fouling them. The Lucania. one of the two largest steamers of the Cunard line, and one of the largest in existence, is of 12,952 tons gross, and 30,000 horse-power. She and her sister ship, the Campania, are subsidised by the Imperial Government to be employed when necessity arises as armed cruisers. These leviathsn boats have made passages across the Atlantic averaging a speed oi 22 knots per hour. To the Lucania belongs the honour of having made the fastest passages on record across the Atlantic, as follows:—Westward in 5 days 7 hours 25 minutes, eastward in 5 days 8 hours 38 minutes.
