AN EDUCATIONAL STRATAGEM.

At Friday's meeting of the Southland Education Board an example was brought to light cf a stiutigem that (tho "Times" says) a member declared to be not uncommon. Tho commission appointed to repcrt on the proposed removal of the Mokoreta School found a private school at one end of the district with an attendance of 25 pupils of school age, while the school itself had an attendance of only 13. A resident of the district, who appeared as a deputation, stated that the private school was intended to force the Board's hand. It had only been opened when the commission was first heard of, and was closed threa days after they had visited the place. Of course, it must be remembered that the gentleman who made these assertions was hostile to the removal, which the private schooZ was intended to assist; but a member remarked that he had seen tho same thing before and mentioned Waianiwa as an, analogous case.
