SYDENHAM.
The ordinary meeting of the Sydenham Borough Cc-ncil was held last night, when there were present—Mr J. Hadneid (Mayor), and Crs. Day, Manhire, Jacques, Bell, R. M. Taylor, Murray, Cutler, Meikleham, and Simm. . , The Avon Road Board wrote asking tbe Council to appoint a delegate to a Conference, to be held on the 23rd instant, to discuss the liability of the Drainage Board to maintain bridge's crossing its drains. Cr. Taylor moved that Cr. Cutler be the council's delegate,, and that the Town Clerk also attend to give any necessary information. This was agreed to. The Sydenham Amateur Swimming Club wrote complaining of the state of the bath, and stating that it had only been whitewashed once instead ot three times. The Town Clerk intimated that the arrangement was that the Council should whitewash the bath only twice. A deputation from the Club waited an the Council, and asked for an improvement of the water supply. The/ also asked that tho bath be whitewashed the following day. It was stated that a practical well-sinker liad expressed the opinion that the street well was giving out, aad that a new well would be necessary. A new well could be sunk under £40, and the club was wLling to guarantee £5 per annum for five years. Cr. Cutler moved that the request of the Club be granted as to cleaning and whitewashing the bath. The mo_on was agreed to, and it was understood that any fractures in the bath would be attended to.
The Works Committee reported that having obtained permission from the Lancaster Park Company, instruction had been given by the Committee for the construction of a sump iv .the Park at Stevens street to enable the Fire Brigade to obtain water from the swimming bath without entering the Park. With respect to the applications of the Sydenham Hockey .Club and the Sydenham Football Club for permission to use portions of the Sydenham Park, the Corn—iittee reconaiuended, seeing that the turf wou.d be damaged to some extent by the play, that the applications be granted on tne payment of £4 by each club lor the season; tho Hockey Club to use the west side, and the Foot-ball Club the east side. With respect to the Government's proposal to 6h_nge the trustees of the Burwood Cemetery, the Committee suggested that a conference of the suburban boroughs t>e held to consider the matter. Cr. Mei_leham moved that the charge for the use of the Park be £1 10s instead of £4, and that the Football Cub should have the west side. The _mendinent was carried by 6to 4. The remainder of the report was adopted.
Ths Finance Committee reported, that the receipts for the fortnight had been: — General account, £190 Is Id; interest account, £41 3s 2d; separate accounts, £143 0s 8d : total, £374 4s lid. Payments were recommended amounting to £628 4s lOd. The balance- of the dillerent accounts were stated to he —Credits: Separate accounts, £498 16s Ad ; interest account, ±5453 0s 9d ; special loan account, £4855 is Id; total credits, £5806 18s 2d. General account debit, £2884 9s od. The report was adopted.
