WELLINGTON NOTES.
[By Telegraph.] (from otjb. special correspondent.) WELLINGTON. February 2. A J.P., one of Mr Seddon's most recent appointments, figured a day or two ago as a judgment debtor in the local court, the debt due being under £5. The debt had been incurred through the J.P. endorsing a promissory note. In reply to the judgment creditor's solicitor, the debtor said he made practically no earnings whatever, and he was not in a position to pay the amount. „ ir Kenny. S.M., suggested that Ins "brother justice" ought to Do able to pay at least _s 6d a week. 'I lie debtor, however, here commenced to deny the genuineness of the original judgment, and when he was confronted with the Court copy of a document bearing his signature—a signature apparently witnessed and attested to by aiiottier J.p. who resided a little distance away-—_s denied point blank that the signature w_f his. The- Magistrate commented uu c„s" seriousness of this statement, and added, "t must consider whether or not 1 shall pot this matter in the hands of the police to lind out who forged your name, ll it is found out that you have not told the truth you will be indicted for perjury." An order for the payment of 2s 6d was in the meantime made; but as far as can be learned nobody is being proceeded against by the police for perjury or anything else. The regulations for carrying out the provisions of the Municipal Franchise Inform Act will probably be gazetted this week. The Wellington Trades Council has' decided to form a deputation to wait on the Minister of Labour to urge on him the alleged necessity for the establishment of a Government tailoring workshop, for tha manufacture of the clothing rei-uired in con* nectiuu with tho State services.
