Mr Chamberlain offered to recom_aend>tbe colonies contributing to the cost of the administration of New Guinea to repay to Mr John Lowles and Sir Somers Vines the expenses • incurred since April in' connection with tne Land Commission; The syndicate;claimed £15,000 as compensation for tne' 'Refusal of l_e Imperial authorities* to?carry, out- the arrangement, but now are willing to accept a considerably less sum in order:, to settle, or as ah alternative to accept a grant."of" forty thousand acres of lana. Sir William Macgregor does not recommend the latter alternative. The Liverpool Syndicate was willing. to amalgamate with the Syndicate on whose behalf Mr Lowles actedy provided he withdrew his objections.
