Marriage licenses have been fixed at the prohibitive figure of £120 in the Indian
>«rritory of the United States. This extraordinary law ha 3 come into operation in order to stop the practice of white men in the territory marrying Indian brides—of course from pnrely sordid motives. An Indian woman's share in the tribal lands is often worth as much as £600, quite a sufficient attraction to the "mean white." Years ago, in New Zealand, the constant, marriages between " pakehas" and Maori women were prompted by the same motives.
