NOTES AND MEMORANDA.

* The benefit carnival in aid of funds to wipe off the debit balance of the New Zealand Association, made over the Australasian meeting, takes place this afternoon at Lancaster Park. An excellent programme has been arranged. The New Zealand champions, H. R. R*ich and A. B. Truscott, are to appear. The Relay Race wilt probably be a feature of the afternoon's sport, teams having entered from all the local clubs. The following have been picked to represent the polo teams:—East Christchurch, Wauchop, Truscott, Newton, Stokes, Ormandy, Barritt, and Watson; Combined Clubs, Halliday, Patterson, Fox, Smart (Omstchurch), Russell, Cameron (Sydenham), Allen (Richmond). The programme of the Christ's College Rifles' concert appears elsewhere. The Committee have found it accessary, in consequence of the large demand for tickets, to permit the holders of dress circle tickets to reserve orchestral stalls. Each lady will be presented with a fan. The Garrison Band will perform the latest music composed by the most capable bandmasters in the United States Army. At a meeting of the Addington Bath Committee arrangements were made for the opening of the bath on Saturday, 17£h. It was decided to hoCd a 50yds inter-club handicap race, and a 50yds juniors' handicap, entries to close this evening at the Clarendon Hotel. There is also to be high diving, plunging, and an exhibition of life saving by members of the Life Saving Society 'of London. To-morrow the Very Rev- Father Le Menant dcs Chesnais, V.G., assisted by the Rev. Father Servajean and several other - priests, will bless and opeu the newly completed Catholic church at Addington. The ceremony will begin at 10* am., when a solemn High Mass will be celebrated. A number of talented ro..;_cians have promised to assist at the ceresneay. * Messrs Heywood and" Co., the local agents for the Norwich Union Fire Insurance Company, have sent us samples of their wall and desk calendars and blotting books for 1899. We have also to acknowledge receipt of a date-calendar from Messrs Hulbert and Co. The officials of the Pioneer Bicycle Club who have charge of the-different departments of the Boxing Day meeting have their arrangements well forward. The programme for the day is a particularly long one, and entries are being received from all over the colony. Record entries have been received for the Christchurch Cycling Chib's meeting, which takes'place next Friday (Anniversary Day) and Saturday. Great interest is being taken in the New Zealand Wheel Race, which has drawn an entry of fifty-seven competitors. ■ A Christmas Fancy Fair an a large scale is to be held.in the Oddfellows' Hah, Lichfield street, on December 15tih, 16th, and 17th, by the members of the St. Asaph street mission. For the usual Akaroa excursion on the 16th inst. the Union Steamship Company are placing on the favourite passenger boats Corinna and Flora, and these should provide ample accommodation for all excursionists. A meeting to solution of the drink problem will be held in the Opera House to-morrow evening. Addresses will be given by Rev. H. C. M Watson, Rev. F. W. Isitt, and Mr T. E. Taylor, M.H.R. A children's concert will take place at the Durham street School on Wednesday next, when Mrs Coleman's pupils will take partin the programme. The proceeds will be in aid of tho Deaconess's Home. The closing ceremony in connection with Girfcon College, Latimer square, will take place on Thursday next, at 3 p.m., when there will be an exhibition of class work, presentation of certificates and prizes, and speeches by the principal and others. The farewells of Colonel and Mrs Hoskin and Adjutants Sharp and Moreton, of the Salvation Army, will take place at the Victoria street Barracks to-night at seven o'clock. The subject of Mr W. W. Collins's lecture at the Lyceum to-morrow will be "Faith Healing." There will be a musical programme before the lecture. Considerable rivalry exists between the gun detachments drilling for the military tournaments at Dunedin and Auckland, with the result that challenges have been exchanged, and will be decided at the Battery's military display at the Opera House on December 19th. The Sydenham Band will accompany the 2.10 tram to the Port H o-n»orrow. The Waihora Park sports will be held in the Domain, Rabbit Island, on Anniversary Day. There is a good programme of twentytwo events. On the 16th inst. the Natives' Association will revive the glories of Anniversary Day by giving a New Zealand concert at the Opera House. A magnificent programme has been prepared, and there is no doubt that there will be a very large attendance on the occasion. At the Albert Hall to-morrow Mr Blair will lecture on "The Future of the Human Race," at 6.30, also at 8 p.m. on the same subject in Cathedral square. The lectures will be continued from Monday to Friday in the Albert Hall at 7.30 p.m. On the occasion of the New Zealand entertainment to be given at the Opera House on AxuMversary night, the New Brighton Tramway Company has consented to run a special late tram, leaving the Square at 11 o'clock.
