GOLD IN TARANAKI.
For years past prospectors have searched the ranges in the neighbourhood of Mount Egraont for minerals of various sorts. Recently there has been some excitement caused by discoveries of quartz in the Putua ranges said to be gold-bearing. A certain amount of ore has already been sent to Auckland for treatment, and (according to the " Taranaki Herald "), another load was shipped by the Gairloch last Friday. This ore is supposed to be much richer in the precious metal than any that has been sent in before. The Oakura correspondent of the " Herald" says that some sanguine people are beginning to look upon the discovery of payable quartz as a certainty. Land is being enquired after, and prices have stiffened a little.
