THE BATTLE OF MANILA.

FURTHER PARTICULARS. (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) AUCKLAND, Juno 8. A graphic description of the battle of Manila by the correspondent o£ the "New York Herald," who was on board the Olympia, shows that the Americana had a very much warmer time than the cables indicated. Near Cavite two powerful submarine mines were exploded ahead of the Olympia. Immense volumes of water were thrown high in the air, but no harm was done to the fleet. The shore battery at Cavite sent a shot over the Olympia that nearly hit the battery in Manila, but the Spanish guns soon got a better range. The sheila were bursting about the American ships, and one shell bnrst directly overhead, when a hoarse cry of " Bemembor the Maine !" rang from 500 throats. A large shell coming straight for the Olympia burst one hundred feet away. One shot struck the Baltimore and passed clean through her, hitting no one. Another ripped her main deck, disabled a gun, exploded a box of ammunition, and wounded eight men. The Olympia was struck abreast the gun wardroom by a shell, which did little damage. The signal halyards were cnt from Lientenant Brumby's hands on the after bridge. A shell entered the Boston's port quarter and burst in the officers' stateroom, starting a hot fire. A tire also started in the port hammock netting. By this time three Spanish ships were on fire and-were soon, all destroyed by theiierce American fire. The large transport Manila and many smaller crafts fell into the hands of the Yankees. In Cr:*» the insurgents are suffering, but are hopeiul. On May 11th the Hudson, Wilmington, and Winslow entered Cardenas to attack the Spanish gunboats. The latter, supported by the land batteries, kept up a terrific fusilade for one hour. The Winslow was disabled by the Spaniards, and rolled helplessly, the shells falling fast around her. The Hudson attempted to throw a line, but the shell burst aboard and four men were killed and three wounded. When the line finally reached the Winslow only three men were able to aid in making it fast. The American ships then hurriedly left the harbour.
