PARTICULARS OF THE BOMBARDMENT.
THE FORTS SILENCED. NO DAMAGE TO THE AMERICAN SHIPS. Received June 9th, 1 a.m. Washington, Juue 8. Admiral Sampson telegraphs thai the bombardment completely silenced the guns at the Santiago forts on Monday. The American vessels suffered no damage. At seven in the morning, during a dense fog, the fleet in double column, with the Brooklyn leading the westward and the New York the eastward divisions, sent a torrent of shells into the forts. The Spaniards replied promptly, but their shots went wide. The Brooklyn and Texas quickly silenced the batteries. The Brooklyn, at a range of eight hundred yards, destroyed the Esfcrelk fort, while the smaller vessels swept the inshore batteries. The New York and New Orleans followed, clearing the Castro and burnipgthe Catarina forts. Owing to the presence of Lieutenant Morro as a prisoner at Morro fort, Admiral Sampson has ordered it not to be attacked. The Spaniards abandoned the cruising ship Mercedes. '
