At the fifth annual general meeting ef the LyHelton Hoilway So;ial Club a very satisfactory report was presented. The following wtsi-c elected officers for the ensuing year: —President, Mr W. Hannay; vicepresident, Mr J. Owon; liwi. secretary, Mr J. T. Pavitt; lion, Mr U-. "Cox; librarian. Mr P. Couch. Hearty votes of tlv&uks were passed to Messrs E. At tho iirst quarterly meeting of the Fendalton Youug Men's Club, the Secretary, Mr H. Beckett, reported that the club was iv a good position financially and had now a membership of forty. A gymnastic class, with Mr Tankard as instructor, had been formed. A gramophone exhibition waa given by Mr D. H. Brown and a ehort addi-iss by Canon Stack. The syllabus at the fortnightly meeting of the St. John's Literary Association was "Aα Evening With Tenuyson," ueariy everybody present either reading or reciting something trom that poet's works. At the annual meeting of ,tho Southbrook Public Library subscribers Mr £e*n was reelected secretary and treasurer for tho year. It was decided to canvass the district ia order to increase the number of subscribers, and Messrs Buckley, Pickard and Bean were appointed for the work.

The anniversary celebrations in connection with tho Sydenham Methodist Church were commenced ou Sunday, at the v orning service of which day* Mr J. T. Smitn olliciated. The Key. H. Bull preached in the evening, and in the afternoon there waa a special musical service with an address by tho Rev. J. A. Hosking. Yesterday evening the celebrations were continued, when a sacred concert was given, at which the cantata " Daniel, or the captivity and restoration," was rendered by the choir and orchestra before a large audience. Mr G. Daltry was an efficient conductor. Miss E. A. Hall was organist, and the soloists were Misses Alaysie Hall and Annio Chegwin, and Messrs W. A. Hall, A. Joll, J. Peek, T. JollandW. West. Oα Sunday special collections were taken up for tho trust funds of the church.

The carnival in connection with St. John's Church, Leeston, was again well attended yesterday. The management havo deoided to continue the exhibition until Thursday night. In addition to the exhibits mentioned in yesterday's paper, Mr G. Barker sent an attractive exhibit of Maori curios and specimens of quartz. Messrs G. Shepherd, Tipler, Hiuks, Young, Woodward, Burns, Woodman and Hight also sent interesting and valuable exhibits, and Mesdames Howson, Woodman and Bohan contributed some rare and ancient exhibits of domestic work. A refreshment table waa under the able management of Mesdames Hammond and Ensor, Missee Hammond, Galpin, Sniithson and Craddock, Mrs Lunn was in charge of a fancy work stall. In the Orango Hall several tableaux and waxworks exhibitions were under the supervision of Mr R. E. Brooke. Mr Ensor (photographer) was in charge of the electri* cal appliances. Mr Gundry had charge of the telephone, gramophone and microphone. The last meeting of the St. Saviour's Mutual Improvement Sooiety took the form of a social. Miss Gill played a pianoforte solo, Mr A. H. Cooper a flute eolo, songs were given by Miss Pitcaim and Messrs Rhodda, Midgloy, and Wright, a recitation by Mr F. Eggleton, and duets by Messrs Wright and Rhodda, and by Mr Eggleton and Miss Harder. The annual meeting of tho Geraldine Floral, Horticultural, and Industrial Society was held on Monday night. The programme was in oharge of Messrs P. Johnson, Brown and Sinclair, and was one of the best that has been given in the rooms for many a long ! day. Mr R. Struthers sang " The March of the Cameron Men "well, and Mr C. Read gave "The Lost Chord," with mandolin and guitar accompaniment, and "By the Fountain," both of which were highly appreciated. Messrs Halley and Smart gave songs, and Mr Painter's mandolin and guitar band played a couple of selections very successfully. Mr Sinclair's string band played two pieces nicely, and Mies McLean gave two piano solos welJ. Mr Connal, one of the vice-presidents, presided on the occasion, and the audience were most enthusiastic in their appreciation of the various items.

The recently formed Lytteltort Choral Society gave their fitet concert ira Tuesday evening, in the Colonists' Hall, which was fairly well filled. Songs were nicely sung by Misses Brad* ley, Ormiston and Galbraith, Mesdames Ironsides and Willcox, and Meseri BMcGregor, G. E. Collins, IS. B. Webb and C. Y. Clow, and a duet was eung by Misses Bradley. The audience showed their appreciation by re - demanding most of these. The members of the society acquitted themselves very well in the glees "Ye little birds that sit and sing/ " Spring's awakening," " Sunset*" and" When winds breathe soft," the lastnamed being loudly encored. Mr E. U. Just, the conductor, and Mrs Bromley, who accompanied on the piano, contributed much to the success of a very pleasant and creditable entertainment.
