It was freely speculated that the owners of entrants for the Canterbury Trotting Club's Free-for-All would hardly oontinue the engagement on Saturday, seeing the race is a foregone conclusion for Fritz. In view of the probability of the event being a walkover, at least Mr Buokland was going to save it being such by sending his oraok for a record, the Club was prepared to give a second Free-for-All with Frit-* barred. However, three owners besides the Australian visitor continued the engagement, so the proposal for the new race fell through. The idea of those that paid up was understood to be to make a field so that Mr Buokland should have the full reward for bringing* Fritz to New Zealand, as, according to the rules, it is required that there be three starters to entitle the winner to the fall stake. At TattersalPs on Saturday a speoial entry of trotting stock from Ashburton was dis* posed of as follows :—Bh Mambrino Mao, by Berlin—Fanny Belle, imp., Mr J. Jardin, 31gs; bf, by General Tracy—Southern Queen, 4 yrs, Mr D. O'Brien, 56gs; oh i RoSignol, by Mambrino Mao—Jenny Tracy, Captain Popham, 36gs ; b g Gillie Riabhach, by Blackwood Abdallah, aged, Mr Smith, llgs. Lepanto, by Corinth—Nonsense, was sold at Tattersall's Bazaar on Saturday, being knocked down to Mr D. O'Brien for 35gs. Very satisfactary entries have been received for the ABhburton Coursing Club's meeting, whioh takes plaoe at Longbeach to-morrow.
