There is some doubt as to whether the second burglar was shot. Detective Donovan, when stopping the cart, received painful injuries on his side, but he hung on to the prisoner who was placed in his keeping. LORD HAMPDEN ON NEW ZEALAND. The Governor, Lord Hampden, says that the thrifty character of tbe New Zealanders stands them in good stead, and looking at the people as a whole, without pretending to examine beneath the surface, they appeared to be' having a j)rosjsequs.jfcijine. ~.._...... v - A FATAL ROW. | During a row in a house at Dariinghurs, early this morning, a young man fatally shot his landlady, and has been arrested on suspicion of causing her death. LAMBING RETURNS. The lambing returns for last year show the percentage to be 42.7, being a decrease of 17 per cent compared with 1896. The principal decrease was in the winter and spring lambing. Owing chiefly to the drought the ewes showed a decrease of nearly 50 per cent. Received January 24th, 10.50 p.m. FRUIT DISEASES ACT.
