THE DREYFUS CASE.
SCENE IN THE FRENCH CHAMBER. A FREE FIGHT. EXCITEMENT IN FRANCE. United Preae Ajeociation—By Electric Telegraph— Copyright. Received Janaaiy 24th, 9.55 a.m. Paris, January 22. A wild scene occurred in the Chamber of Deputies during a discussion on the Dreyfus case. While M. Jaures, the leader of the Socialist party, was addressing the Chamber M. Debernis interjected an accusation to the effect that M. Jaures was acting as counsel for Dreyfus. M. Jaures retorted by calling his accuser a coward and a rascal. M. Debernis dashed towards the rostrum, and struck M. Jaures and other Deputies who interfered. A free fight on the floor of the Chamber between the .Socialist Deputies and the members of the Right followed. The President was unable to restore order, and was compelled to call in the military. He left the chair, and the sitting was suspended. Received January 2SQ), 0.50 a.m. j London, January 24. j M. de Blowitz, correspondent of Ihe Times, referring to the rjetous i scene in the Chamber of Deputies, | considers it was due largely to electioneering tactics in anticipation of an early dissolution. During the melee fiste and feet were freely used, and inkstands were thrown. A number of soldiery appeared on the threshold, but quickly withdrew, owing to an indignant outcry at their presence. The excited fight continued in the lobbies. Paris is much excited over the affair. The chief centres are filled with troops to prevent rioting. The anti-semitio agitators are quite overawed by the demonstration. M. Meline, the Premier, compared ihe street appeals to a revolution, and determined to sternly suppress such a thing. He refused to produce Dreyfus' s confession, because it would imply a reopening of the trial. <
