AMATEUR ATHLETIC CLUB.

The eleventh annual cross-country eteeple- j chase meeting under the auspices of the Canterbury Amateur Athletic Club took place on Saturday afternoon at the Show Grounds, Addington, of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association. The weather was cold and windy, and the attendance was limited. The chief event on the programme, the Three-mile Steeplechase, was won by S. Pentecost, of the Richmond Football Club. He had 350 yds start, and finished fast, being pushed by F. Truscott (300 yds) half way down the straight on the home stretch. The officials of the day were :—Referee—Dr. Jennings. Judges— Dr. Thomas, Messrs J. F. Grierson and A. H. Anderson. Timekeepers —Messrs A. Francis, T. Bassett and C. Hood-Wilhams. Handicappers—Messrs L. W. Harley, J. C. Cusack and Ren. Bassett. Ground Stewards —Messrs H. S. Batchelor, F. S. Harley, 0. F. Smith, D. Wood and F. W. Johnston. Starter—Mr Jas. Hiorns won by between three and four yards and about the same distance separated second and third. C. F. Smith was running second at the second last hurdle, in negotiating which he fell. Truscott, and Appleyard, the limit men, in the order named, led the first lap. On tho third lap an alteration had taken pace, Pentecost having gone to the front, followed by A. B. Truscott, F. Truscott, Waldren, and Appleyard. On the fourth lap £. Truscott was leading, with A. B. Truscott, Pentecost, Cook, Harrington, and Garsia as named. Coinmaucing the last lap the field was very largely reduced, feutecost had resumed the lead, F. Truscott close beside him, Cook, Garsia, Harrington, Jameson and Norris following up. Entering the straight in the run home Truscott challenged his leader and a good con test, in which Truscott was ultimately beaten, lasted half-way to the tape, which Pentecost reached several yards in front of his opponent. The others who finished were many yards behind. Time, 17mm 33sec. 440 Yards Flat Handicap ; prizes value £1 and 10a— J. L. Smith, C.A.A.C, 4ydd, 1 ; C F. Smith, C.A.A.C, 10yds, 2; C K.
