THE MORTALITY AMONG BREEDING EWES.
Mr J. A. Gilruth, the Chief Government Veterinary Surgeon, ha 3 during the past few days visited Ashburton, Burnham and Kjkst Kyreton for the. purpose of enquiring into the reported deaths among breeding ewes. The sheep that he oxamined were ia all cases in an exceptionally, fat condition, due to the mildness of the season, and to artificial feeding, such as hay, chaff, turnips, &c. Since the late rains, which has brought on the young grass, the death rate has been reduced to the normal limits. Thos* flockowners on the plains who had provided soft feed for the ewes during the last month b»fore lambing did not suffer any loss. Mr Gilruth leaves for the South to-day.
